All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day are 2 different holiday occasions and not many people realize it. All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day are related holiday occasions, but they are two entirely different and separate celebrations. There is also another celebration or holiday related to both which is Halloween.

Halloween is celebrated before All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day. Halloween is derived from Hallow and een. Hallow means “holy” and een is an abbreviation of “evening”. When put together it refers to the Eve of All Hallows, which is the night before the holy day that honours people of the past. That is why some trick or treating costumes are mostly of “people of the past”.

All Souls’ Day is an occasion for us to pray for all the souls, be it departed or not. Among the Catholics – the Philippines is a Catholic country – prayers made by the people are mostly offered for those souls in purgatory that are waiting to get into heaven. There is also an All Soul’s Tradition that is made in Catholic churches wherein a Book of the Dead is placed near the altar to have the opportunity to write the names of the relatives or people to be remembered.

All Saints’ Day is a celebration for the souls or of the communion of those people that we believe are and is in heaven through the good works they made and of God’s grace. It is also a day to remind us of how we are supposed to live.
